Putting on a corset for the first time is easier than it looks — once you understand the sequence. This step-by-step guide covers the complete process from start to finish.
Before You Put It On
Put on your liner garment first — a thin cotton camisole or dedicated corset liner. This protects the corset from perspiration and your skin from the corset's edges. Check that the laces are evenly tensioned on both sides of the back opening before putting the corset on — uneven tension means uneven reduction.
Putting It On
(1) Hold the corset at the front with the busk (the rigid closure) facing you. (2) Wrap it around your torso with the busk at center front. (3) Hook the busk from the bottom upward — hook the bottom stud first, then work upward to the top. Starting from the bottom positions the corset correctly at the waist before the upper section is secured. (4) The lacing should be at center back, reasonably loose.
Lacing and Tightening
(1) Find the center of the lacing — the two loops at the waist. (2) Pull both loops outward simultaneously (bunny ears method) to tighten at the center. (3) Once center is at desired tightness, work the slack upward and downward from center by working the lacing from the center outward. (4) The lacing should form an even tension from top to bottom — not all the tension concentrated at the waist. (5) Tie off at the back with a bow. For a new or unseasoned corset, only tighten to the point where you feel the garment's presence — not to maximum reduction.
Taking It Off
(1) Untie the bow and loosen the laces completely before attempting to open the busk. (2) Open the busk from the top downward — unhook the top stud first, then work downward. Never try to force the busk open while the laces are still tight. (3) Remove the corset. (4) Hang it open with busk unhooked and laces loose for several hours before storing, to allow moisture to evaporate.
