The modesty panel is a simple accessory that solves the gap-at-the-back problem — covering the skin and undergarments visible through the lacing.

Corset Modesty Panel — What It Is & How to Make One

What a Modesty Panel Does

When a corset is laced, a gap of 1–4 inches remains at center back. Through this gap, the liner garment, skin, and undergarments beneath the corset are visible. A modesty panel is a fabric piece that covers this gap from the inside — it sits between the liner and the corset, hiding the back gap and providing a smooth, finished appearance. It also prevents the lacing cord from contacting skin directly.

Making a Modesty Panel

A modesty panel is simple to make: cut a strip of fabric 4–6 inches wide and the length of your corset's back edge. Finish all edges with serging or a narrow hem. Attach to one side of the corset at the top edge with a button, hook, or by threading it through the top few lacing loops. The panel hangs inside the lacing gap, free at the bottom. Use matching or coordinating fabric — cotton coutil, fashion fabric to match the corset, or a contrast fabric for a deliberate design choice.

When You Need One

A modesty panel is useful when: wearing a corset as visible outerwear and wanting a finished back appearance; wearing the corset with clothing that reveals the back gap; preferring not to have the lacing cord in contact with skin. It is not necessary for waist training under clothing, or when the gap is not visible. Some corsets are sold with matching panels; others are not — making your own is quick and inexpensive.
