The busk is the front closure of a corset — and installing it correctly is one of the most technically demanding aspects of corset construction.

Corset Busk Guide — Types, Installation & Hardware

Busk Types

Straight busk: Two parallel steel strips, uniformly rigid from top to bottom. One bears the loop hardware; one bears the stud hardware. This is the most common busk type in modern corsets. Spoon busk: The stud side flares outward at the lower end, curving away from the body. This accommodates the lower abdomen and was the standard Victorian busk style from the 1870s onward. Busk with hip spring: Some modern busks are slightly pre-curved to follow the body's front contour. Busk widths: 7mm (narrower, more flexible), 10mm (standard), and wider for very structured corsets.

Busk Length

Busk length must match the corset's front length minus a small allowance at each end. A busk that is too long will extend beyond the corset edge, causing irritation and preventing the top and bottom edges from sitting properly. A busk that is too short will leave the corset unstiffened at the ends — causing the fashion fabric to wrinkle and the corset to lose its shape at the opening. Standard busk lengths correspond to corset front lengths; measure carefully before ordering.

Installation

Busk installation: (1) Mark the center front fold of the corset front panel. (2) The loop side is typically placed on the wearer's left; stud side on the right — this matches the standard convention for women's garment closures. (3) Mark stud positions from the top of the busk length on the stud side; mark corresponding loop positions on the loop side. (4) Make small holes or slits at each mark; insert the hardware through from the fashion fabric side. (5) The hardware is held in place by the sandwich of coutil layers and the bone channel tape. Critical: The loop and stud positions must align exactly for the closure to function. Test-fit before final stitching.
